Washing stuffed animals...?

My son's puppy munched on my sons favorite monkey in the rain and now it stinks like puppy slobber and old water... I tried to wash the surface but it still stinks... I sewed all the tears closed and my son put band aids on the "owies". I really want to wash it but have heard that the washing machine ruins the toys. I don't know what else to do... anyone got any ideas?
