My 1995 Ford PU heater core went out......?

I can't afford to replace it right now, the mechanic said it needs to be closed off???? to stop the truck from over heating, it still blows enough heat to defrost the windshield, but you can smell the radiator smell, What are the dangers to riding in the truck, (other than it's freakin cold) oand damage to the truck?
